A woman asked the Internet if she’s an a**hole after admitting that she secretly feeds meat to her 9-year-old vegan nephew.
The woman confessed on Reddit’s AITA (Am I the A**hole) forum that she has been secretly feeding animal products to her 9-year-old vegan nephew when she’s looking after him but is too afraid to tell her vegan sister.
“My sister has been vegan for many years and she is also raising her son vegan,” she said on her post. “He has been vegan since birth. My nephew and son attend the same school so I pick them up from school every day. My nephew has snacks and dinner at my house every weekday before his mom comes to pick him up.”
“I usually make a dish for my family and a separate vegan dish for my nephew. A couple of months ago I left them with their homework and snacks and went to do some chores, came back and found my nephew and son sharing chicken nuggets.”
“I provided him with vegan snacks, but he still ate the chicken nuggets. I told him those weren’t vegan, and he told me he that he eats meat in school sometimes. His friends share their meals with him sometimes. I thought about telling my sister but decided not to.”
The woman said she continues to offer vegan options but will not say anything if her nephew would choose the non-vegan one. She added that her nephew “usually” picks the non-vegan option.
Even though she respects her sister by providing vegan options for her nephew, her husband still thinks she’s an a**hole for not telling her sister about the situation.
She said: “I know my sister would freak out if she knew he’s eating meat…My husband thinks IATA for not telling her and being dishonest, but I think my nephew is old enough to make his own dietary choices (he’s 10 this year). So, AITA? Should I tell my sister what’s going on?”
The woman’s confession sparked a debate between Reddit users. As it was shared in Reddit’s “anti-vegan” section, some defended the woman’s refusal to confess to her sister.
A Reddit user commented: “Well, technically, you’re not feeding him meat, you’re still giving him a vegan option, he’s just choosing non-vegan. And does she pay you for vegan food to feed him? If not, screw her. Why should YOU have to use your money because SHE insists he has a ‘special’ diet?'”
“I bet you he subconsciously realises that meat makes him feel better, more energy, less tired and seems to go for it every occasion he can. Probably also tastes way better, most vegan food is incredibly bland and limited,” said another.
Another Reddit user added: “One was forced on him, the other is his choice. So YOU aren’t the asshole here. Some one who forces their child to follow their crazyness, on the other hand.”
However, vegans and other concerned social media users jumped in the discussion and disagreed with the aunt.
“I wonder what else she’s lying and deceptive about.
And nuggets for crying out loud! Poison,” said one social media user.
Another added: “Aside from the dishonesty and all that, 10 is definitely not old enough to be making your own dietary choices!!! Just give him a bag of candy then, I’m sure he would choose that over the broccoli too.”
“SMH at the people who think chicken nuggets are going to make the child healthy and give them more energy,” said another.
Another social media user commented: “I’m lost for words! I just listen to a podcast with Dr Michael Greger, The latest on children’s health, where he states that streaks of hardening of the arteries can be seen in omnivores as early as 10 years old…did I mention it was in all 100% of the kids. It’s a health choice MOTHERS (parents) get to implement and should not be taken lightly. I’m disgusted by this woman!”
“Somehow she should’ve told the mum he was eating nuggets… for a start he wouldn’t know it’s meat… if I’ve had someone else’s child at my home no matter what age I am careful to ask what the child’s allergies are and what they are used to… This becomes dangerous,” warned another.
The meat-eating aunt has not given an update regarding the situation.
