Vegan politician Michael Dello-Iacovo pledges to donate half of his salary to animal organizations and charities if he’s elected in 2019 elections.
Dello-Iacovo, an Animal Justice Party candidate, is running for a seat on Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state parliament, Heffron electoral district.
“If elected, this means I’d be splitting over $50,000 AUD ($35,554 USD) each year across charities working to help those most in need,” said Dello-Iacovo in a statement.
“It would be a privilege to be able to use any extra money I have to make a real difference in the world.”
The vegan politician is passionate about both science and “making the world a better place.”
He is currently taking his PhD in space science — focusing on asteroid exploration, mining, and impact risk — and was formerly the CEO of Effective Altruism Australia, a nonprofit organization that partners with other organizations to maximize donations.
“I want to ensure that those who don’t get a vote—animals, the environment, and future generations—are represented in our political system,” Dello-Iacovo concluded.
The Australian elections will be held on March 23, 2019 to replace all 93 seats in the NSW Legislative Assembly and 21 of the 42 seats in the NSW Legislative Council.
