Most of the new positives were detected in Moscow (5,694), in the homonymous province (2,487) and in Saint Petersburg (1,978), reported the Sputnik news agency.
The rebound in cases and deaths is attributed to the Delta variant, which was detected for the first time in India and is much more contagious, according to the authorities in recent days.
Unlike some other countries hit by this mutation, in Russia the increase in cases is also accompanied by high numbers of deaths due to the fact that the population is highly reluctant to be vaccinated.
Russian President Vladimir Putin repeatedly urged the population to receive some of the vaccines manufactured by Russia.
Given the advance of the disease, Moscow last month restricted access to restaurants and bars for people who cannot prove that they are vaccinated, that they already had the disease or that they do not have it.
