Michael K. Williams, iconic actor from The Wire series, found dead

Actor Michael K. Williams, known for portraying the character of Omar Little on the television series “The Wire”, it was found dead this Monday in his apartment in the Brooklyn neighborhood of New York.

The news of the death was confirmed by police sources to the newspaper New York Post. Authorities investigate a possible overdose as cause of death, although it is not confirmed.

Michael Kenneth Williams, 54, rose to fame thanks to his role in The wee, a choral portrait of the city of Baltimore and which is considered by specialists as one of the three best series in history from the TV.

On that show, produced by David Simon, he played Omar Little, a homosexual gangster that assaulted Baltimore drug dealers and exposed the different codes of the city’s underworld.

He had previously appeared in another iconic series as The Sopranos, in one episode. Later he participated in Boardwalk Empire, Community and The Night Of, among a score of series in which he had participations of greater or lesser prominence.

He also had a rich film career – with appearances in films such as 12 years of slavery (Oscar winner), Assassin’s Creed and in the saga of The purge. His last film was The Red Sea Diving Resort, 2019.

Williams began his career as a dancer, in video clips and tours of various artists. And she also dabbled as a model, before turning to acting. He did not have an easy youth: he came to confess that he lived periods without having a home.

The actor’s work often garnered the attention of awards, including three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his work on When They See Us, The Night Of and Bessie. He was currently in contention for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work in Lovecraft Country.

“I know about his past, I know how he thought, what his opinions were,” he had said in an interview about Howard Phillips Lovecraft. “My opinion is that Lovecraft was a dark guy and a brilliant writer. At least he knew how to turn his worst instincts into art. I wish we could all do that: take our flaws and do something good with them. “

Lovecraft Country It was one of the most watched series on HBO in 2020, thanks to its powerful combination of terror and racial segregation that was experienced in the United States of the 1950s. However, with a first version of the script in the works, the company decided to cancel its second season.

The news of the cancellation was surprising, in addition, because the series was not only praised by critics, but its broadcast was very well received by audiences around the world. The final episode, released on October 18, 2020, reached a record number of 1.5 million viewers, the highest in history for an episode premiered on the same day on the HBO Max platform.

In addition to acting, Williams had also branched out into non-fiction storytelling, notably hosting and executive producing a 2016 documentary series for VICELAND titled Black Market with Michael K. Williams.
