FDA Authorized Third Booster Dose of Coronavirus Vaccine for the Immunosuppressed

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized this Thursday a third dose of the vaccine against covid-19 for people with weakened immune systems, while the government makes efforts to prevent the spread of the delta variant.

“The country has entered another wave of the covid-19 pandemic and the FDA is especially aware that immunosuppressed people are at special risk of being seriously ill, “Acting Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Janet Woodcock said in a statement.

Precisely the FDA authorized the emergency use of a third dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines and Modern for solid organ transplant recipients or those with weakened immune systems.

However, it is estimated that one million americans have already received the third dose against the coronavirus, without authorization, in an attempt to increase protection against the deadly virus.

“People who are fully vaccinated are adequately protected and do not need an additional dose of the covid-19 vaccine at this time,” Woodcook said.

The United States earlier this month rejected a request from the World Health Organization (WHO) for stop booster shots to help compensate for the inequality in dose distribution between rich and poor countries.

More of 619,000 people have died in the United States due to covid-19, and the number of infections has increased considerably in recent months due to the spread of the delta variant.

According to the US press, the country’s vaccination program has slowed down particularly in the politically conservative regions of the South and Midwest, as well as among the very young, the lower-income population, and racial minorities.

“At this time, apart from the immunosuppressed, we are not going to give reinforcements to people,” warned the main adviser of the covid-19 in the United States, Anthony Fauci.

However, he clarified that the health authorities decided to carry out “a very careful monitoring” of the pandemic, and if necessary the country says it is prepared for a massive reinforcement of vaccination. “There will inevitably be a time when we will have to give reinforcements“Fauci said.

Covid-19 vaccines are free and available in the United States, but only Half of the population has the complete vaccination schedule.

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced in July that all federal officials must be vaccinated or present tests that show that they have not been infected with the coronavirus, at a time when the country suffers an increase in hospitalizations.

Coronavirus infections have soared to a daily average of more than 100,000, a level not seen since the winter surge, due to the spread of the delta variant.
