Two customers had a huge physical fight over the last vegan sausage roll in a Greggs shop in Glasgow, UK.
According to a video that went viral this week, a woman was ordering Greggs Glasgow’s last vegan sausage roll at the counter when another woman ran to her and suddenly punched her in the head.
The woman who was placing an order smashed into the fridges then kicked the other woman to the floor repeatedly.
“According to witnesses, the fight broke out over who could have the last vegan sausage roll that was available,” says The Tab.
Two customers broke up the fight but the woman who started the fight approached the other woman again until they and the witnesses were all rolling on the floor.
A spokesperson for Greggs confirmed the incident, saying: “We can confirm that there was an incident at our shop on Gordon Street, Glasgow.”
“The safety of our colleagues and customers is extremely important to us, and we are cooperating with the police as they investigate the matter.”
Greggs launched a vegan version of its popular sausage rolls early this year, in time for the monthlong vegan challenge Veganuary.
The vegan sausage rolls, originally launched in 980 UK locations, have proven to be a huge hit — which pushed the bakery chain to launch them in all its 1,980 locations.
“It’s taken us by surprise quite how much excitement it has created. We’re not giving out numbers – it’s in the hundreds of thousands – but it is the fastest selling new product we have launched in six years. It’s literally flying off the shelves,” Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said in a statement.
“We launched it in 900 shops. But with all the hype surrounding it, it sold out straight away and we have 900 shops who didn’t get it who are screaming out for it, so we are chasing our tail getting availability running.”
“We didn’t know if it would sell or not. Now we know it’s selling out we need to get it out there. We are pulling out all the stops to get it out there as quickly as possible.”
A poll conducted by Greggs also revealed that both its vegan and meat-loving customers prefer the vegan sausage rolls to the original meat-based ones as they taste “cleaner” and are “less greasy.”
However, some vegans are still not satisfied with the new vegan option as vegan activists from animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) stormed a Greggs store in Brighton, UK, to demand total animal liberation instead of just vegan options.
The activists, clad in black clothing and pig masks, aimed to “raise awareness of the prolific animal cruelty and exploitation that is animal agriculture.”
“We don’t want more vegan options, we want animal liberation,” a DxE organizer added. “We want their pain to end and their lives to be protected; not a vegan sausage roll.”
Greggs’ vegan sausage rolls, made with vegan Quorn as well as special herbs and spices, are available in all UK locations for £1 each.
