Brazil to exclude Indian vaccine Covaxin from its immunization plan due to contractual irregularities

In an interview with the station, the Minister of Health, Marcelo Quieroga, tried to minimize the situation of the investigations and questioned the need to purchase the vaccine – not yet approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) – at this time.

The Health Ministry bought the doses, produced by the Indian laboratory Bharat Biotech, through the Brazilian company Precisa Medicamentos.

The purchase was suspended at the end of June after numerous questions to the contract, including the high value per dose (15 dollars), the most expensive bought by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro, well above the price initially anticipated by the Bharat Biotech company. , of $ 1.37 per dose, and having paid a millionaire advance.

In addition, the doses never reached the country because Anvisa did not authorize their emergency use.

Queiroga had affirmed that the decision was made after the recommendation of the General Comptroller of the Federation (CGU), which initiated an investigation into the suspicions of corruption raised in relation to the contract.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health reported that an initial preliminary analysis did not detect irregularities in the contract, but chose to suspend it to analyze it in depth.

The alleged irregularities were denounced by the Bolsonarista deputy Luís Miranda and his brother, the official of the Ministry of Health Luís Ricardo Miranda, to the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI) on coronavirus.

According to the complaint, the Government signed a negotiation for the purchase of 20 million doses of the immunizer with a surcharge of 1,000%.

After the testimonies, the senators presented a criminal report for embezzlement against Bolsonaro in the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
