Bezos arrived in space and gave new impetus to the race for his private exploitation

Joining Jeff Bezos were his brother Mark, pioneering aviator Wally Funk, 82, and Blue Origin’s first customer, 18-year-old Dutchman Oliver Daemen. One became the oldest person to reach space and the young one the youngest.

The New Shepard accelerated into space at speeds in excess of Mach 3 on the supersonic scale with no carbon emissions. The capsule was then separated from its propeller and the astronauts spent a few minutes above the so-called Karman Line (100 km), internationally recognized between atmosphere and space.

The crew of the capsule were able to admire the curvature of the blue planet and the intense black color of the universe from the large windows that occupied a third of the cabin surface.

After a few minutes of weightlessness, the capsule descended in free fall before deploying three giant parachutes and then a jet thruster to land softly in the desert after a flight of about 10 minutes.

The four passengers exited the capsule and were greeted with cheers by the Blue Origin team. Jeff Bezos was wearing a cowboy hat when leaving the module.

Blue Origin planned its first manned mission to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of the first moon landing when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their first steps.

The race between Bezos and his competitor Elon Musk is another business vein of privatized space, since the contract with NASA for the transfer of astronauts destined for the International Space Station is in dispute.

Virgin Galactic founder British mogul Richard Branson made the trip on July 11, narrowly beating Amazon mogul in this battle of billionaires.

Jeffrey Preston Bezos, 57, founded Blue Origin in 2000 with the goal of one day building artificial gravity floating space colonies where millions of people work and live.

Recently removed from the board of Amazon, the company he founded, Bezos remains linked to the group of which he owns about 10% of the shares as CEO. A proprietor of The Washington Post newspaper and with a fortune estimated by Forbes at 210,000 million dollars, he managed to remain in the circle of billionaires despite his costly divorce in 2019 from MacKenzie Scott, whom he had married 25 years before and had four children.

This first Blue Origin manned flight was also the first in which a paying passenger traveled. Daemen replaced the original winner of the online auction in mid-July, which paid $ 28 million.
