Demand for Smoked Pulled Jackfruit from The Jackfruit Company has been so massive that it is now expanding into several other grocery stores just months after launch.

This week, The Jackfruit Company, which makes vegan meat alternatives from jackfruit, announced the expansion of its products into several retailers following “high consumer interest and demand” for its Smoked Pulled Jackfruit product.

The Smoked Pulled Jackfruit is a combination of smoked jackfruit and plant-based pea protein that can be enjoyed as is or with barbecue sauce.

It was originally launched in late 2018 in six Whole Foods regions but due to popular demand, other major retailers like Safeway, Albertson’s and Raley’s will now be distributing the product.

The Smoke Pulled Jackfruit is being sold in the meat case by retailers, which may be encouraging meat eaters to go for plant-based alternatives instead.

Jackfruit, which is native to south Asia and also grows in southeast Asia, is often used as a meat replacement by vegetarians and vegans due to its meat-like texture.

“We’re so inspired by the versatility and growing popularity of jackfruit, the meatiest fruit on the planet,” said Annie Ryu, company founder and CEO.

“Our innovation is rooted in bringing familiar, beloved flavors and recipes to life, with a plant-based twist.

“We are thrilled to share the amazing taste and texture of jackfruit with consumers looking for convenient plant-based options that come from nature, not a lab, while still delivering competitive levels of nutrition.”

The vast majority of people who consume meat alternatives are meat eaters, not vegans or vegetarians, and this number is especially high with millennials, with almost 8 in 10 reporting that they consume meat alternatives.

While about half of consumers surveyed said they eat plant-based meat because of health concerns, the majority cite taste as the main reason they enjoy vegan meat products.

The Jackfruit Company also recently announced the launch of Complete Jackfruit Meals, a combination of jackfruit, vegetables and other whole food ingredients, seasonings and sauces.

Complete Jackfruit Meals, which are vegan and gluten-free, come in four flavors: Coconut + Vegetables + Thai Green Chile; Chickpeas + Spinach + Garam Masala; Black Beans + Corn + Tex Mex Spice; and Red Kidney Beans + Tomato + Rustic Herbs.

Complete Jackfruit Meals are currently making their way to US shelves nationally at stores like Whole Foods Market, Earthfare and select Safeway/Albertson’s regions.
