Actors in the UK are calling for vegan and vegetarian makeup for stage and screen due to animal welfare concerns regarding professionally used cosmetics that contain animal ingredients.

A “significant number” of vegan and vegetarian actors have been calling for inclusiveness regarding the makeup used on them — with vegans pushing for animal-free cosmetics that are not tested on animals.

According to The Stage, UK Equity‘s council agreed to discuss the appeal with the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (BECTU), which is dedicated to supporting freelancers and staff in the broadcasting & entertainment industry.

A motion was raised by Equity’s north and east London general branch, which calls for employers to meet the needs of vegan and vegetarian actors.

“People may be vegetarian or vegan for cultural, religious, health, personal or ethical reasons,” said the motion.

“They are all entitled to respect and consideration as much as anyone else. We positively value the richness and diversity they bring to Equity and the profession.”

Equity and BECTU are now working together to develop the skills of hair and makeup professionals working with actors from different backgrounds in order to meet the needs of those with restrictions.
