Almost 40 years after their separation, ABBA continues to set records. The disc ABBA Gold, which compiles the greatest hits of the Swedish group, has just become the first album to last a thousand weeks in the UK rankings.
Released in 1992, the album is the second best seller of all time in Great Britain, with 5,610,000 copies. The only one who overcomes it is Queen’s Greatest Hits, which compiles the greatest hits of the band led by Freddie Mercury.
ABBA Gold gathers the most popular songs of the swedish band, What Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia O Waterloo. He accumulates a total of 19 years and twelve weeks in the top 100 of the British rankings, according to the BBC.
“Not bad for four old turnips”joked Benny Andersson, one of the former members of the Swedish group, upon hearing the news.
The great successes of ABBA remain valid not only on the album, but also found their revival in the theater and in the cinema.
Everything resurfaced with Erasure
Total, ABBA Gold stayed for eight weeks at number one, and is currently in position 17. It is the group’s best-selling album, surpassing studio albums such as Do you want to O Arrival, which reached number one when they were published in the 1970s.
This compilation was published when the band’s career was being revalued by critics. The restart of Abbamania began when at the beginning of 1992 appeared the EP Abba-esque, de Erasure. It consisted of four versions of songs by the Swedish group: Take a Chance on Me, Lay All Your Love On Me, SOS Y Do you want to.
This EP was number one in the UK and made ABBA fashionable again in that country. The mini album transcended borders and reached the rankings in Europe and the United States. It was number one in the United Kingdom and in Sweden when the Swedish quartet had been separated for ten years.
ABBA, in the days when the Swedish band was sweeping the charts and sales.
Then sales of old ABBA records skyrocketed. But the greatest hits albums were out of stock at the time, prompting PolyGram to release a new compilation.
Released that September, ABBA Gold was praised as a perfectly curated album. The specialized medium Pitchfork He recently called it the “definitive example” of the greatest hits format, which “brought together all the international hits of the Swedish pop band in a refined package with surprising emotional range.”
Musical and movies
The resurgence of interest in the band led to the musical work Mamma Mia!, which over the years had two film versions starring Amanda Seyfried, Lily James, Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep.
With each of these new projects around the Swedish band, ABBA Gold went up in the rankings, so that it remained in the top 100 in total almost two decades. Currently, it has been on that list since July 2017.
“To have racked up a thousand weeks on the official album ranking, a solid twenty years of chart presence, is quite remarkable,” said head of rankings Martin Talbot. “It not only highlights the incredible popularity of ABBA, but also how closely they connected with the new generations.”
Two other albums could also reach the same milestone soon are Legendby Bob Marley & The Wailers, which accumulates a total of 984 weeks. For its part, the great successes of Queen have been 952 weeks.
No to the biopic
In May, Björn Ulvaeus, another former ABBA member, said fans can look forward to new music from the band in 2021. “There will be new music this year, that’s final”, anticipated The Herald Sun. “It is no longer a case that it can happen: it will happen,” he said.

But denied that there is going to be a biopic about the band in the near future, despite the success of Queen and Elton John, respectively Rapsodia Bohemia Y Rocketman.
“We don’t want that,” he said. And he added: “Certainly, I know that I would not want an actor, while I am alive, to play me on the big screen. And I do not think that others like it either.”
